Laparoscopic, minimally invasive & Da Vinci robotic

Your procedure is performed with minimally invasive technique — and, when your case calls for it, the Da Vinci robotic system with only three incisions. Less scarring, less pain and a faster recovery, so most international patients are cleared to fly home in as little as 8 days.

What it is

What is bariatric revision surgery?

Revision is what we do when a prior bariatric procedure did not work — either it never delivered enough weight loss, the weight came back, or it caused a complication that needs fixing. The most common revisions are sleeve to bypass conversion (when the sleeve plateaued or GERD developed), band removal or repair (for slipped or eroded gastric bands), and fistula or stricture repair.

Revision is technically harder than primary bariatric surgery. The tissue planes are scarred from the first operation, the anatomy is already altered, and the risk profile is different. Da Vinci robotic surgery is often the right call here — better visualization, finer dissection through scar tissue, smaller and fewer incisions. All three of our bariatric surgeons handle revisions; one of them is Da Vinci certified for robotic cases.

Candidacy

Am I a candidate?

BMI is the starting point, not the answer. Final candidacy is determined in your first consultation by a board-certified bariatric surgeon.

Sleeve plateaued

You lost weight after sleeve but stalled before reaching your goal, or regained.

Severe GERD post-sleeve

Reflux that does not respond to medication is a classic indication for sleeve-to-bypass conversion.

Failed band

Old adjustable gastric band that slipped, eroded, or simply did not work. Removal + sleeve or bypass.

Late complications

Fistulas, strictures, internal hernias, or weight regain after bypass — all surgically correctable.

Benefits & Health Improvements

What you gain — the benefits of revision surgery

A first procedure that did not deliver is not the end of the road. Revision is about getting you the result you were promised the first time — done safely, by specialists.

A second chance at resultsWhen a first procedure stalled or the weight came back, a revision can restart meaningful weight loss — typically 50–70% of the excess weight that remains.
Fixes problems from the first surgeryRepairs issues such as a slipped or eroded band, an enlarged gastric pouch, or a dilated sleeve.
Resolves severe acid reflux (GERD)Converting a sleeve to a bypass usually eliminates the chronic reflux that can develop after the first operation.
Renewed metabolic controlConversion to a bypass can re-improve type 2 diabetes, blood pressure and other obesity-related conditions.
Done by revision specialistsRevision is technically harder than primary surgery — performed by surgeons who specialize in it, with minimally invasive or robotic technique whenever possible.
Risks & Multidisciplinary Support

Revision is harder. Yes, there are risks. No, you won't face them alone.

Revision bariatrics carries higher technical complexity than primary surgery — adhesions, altered anatomy, longer operative times. That is exactly why the program around the procedure matters more, not less. At GOG, our multidisciplinary team follows you from pre-op records review through 12 months after surgery.

Higher leak risk than primary surgery2–4% vs <1% in primary bariatrics. Closely monitored during 1–2 nights of in-hospital observation with bariatric-trained nursing.
Longer operative time90–180 minutes vs 60–120 for primary. Requires senior anesthesia management — included.
Tissue plane scarringScarring from the first operation makes dissection harder. Da Vinci robotic helps in many revisions — included in the same package, higher tier.
Bleeding risk slightly elevatedAround 1–2% vs <1% in primary surgery. Monitored remotely after discharge — direct WhatsApp access if anything looks off.
Less weight loss than primaryRevisions typically deliver 50–70% additional excess weight loss vs 65–80% of a primary bypass. That conversation happens up front, with the data, in your virtual consultation.
Behavioral & regain factorsIf your first surgery failed partly for behavioral reasons, revising the anatomy alone is not enough. Psychology evaluation and habit work are core to the program — not optional add-ons.
Surgical mortality<0.5% at GOG. Globally reported at 0.5–1% for revision bariatrics.
The 12-month accompanimentScheduled virtual check-ins at months 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 with the surgeon, nutritionist and behavioral support. Labs reviewed remotely. Direct WhatsApp to your patient coordinator. International patients get the same program from anywhere in the world.

FAQ

Common questions

If yours is not here, a 45–50 minute virtual consultation is the fastest way to a personalized answer.

How much does revision surgery cost in Colombia?
At GOG, the all-inclusive revision package ranges from USD $7,800 (laparoscopic) to $12,500 (Da Vinci robotic) (COP $30M–$49M). Complex cases may sit at the upper end of the range. Includes surgery, surgeon fee, anesthesia, 1–2 nights hospital, pre-op evaluation including imaging, and 12-month follow-up.
Should I send my old surgical records before the consultation?
Yes. Operative report, recent imaging, and labs (last 6 months) help us tell you on the first call whether revision is technically feasible and what kind. Email them when you book.
What does revision usually involve?
Most common: sleeve to bypass conversion (for plateau or GERD), band removal + new procedure, fistula or stricture repair. Less common but possible: bypass to distal bypass for inadequate weight loss.
Will I lose as much weight as the first time?
Usually not. Revisions typically deliver 50–70% of excess weight loss vs the 65–80% of a primary bypass. The body has already adapted to the first surgery and the second one builds on a different baseline.
Is Da Vinci robotic better for revision surgery?
Often, yes. Scarred tissue planes from a previous surgery are harder to navigate laparoscopically. Da Vinci gives better visualization and finer instrument control through scar tissue — Dr. Felipe Bernal is Da Vinci certified for these cases. Same price as conventional laparoscopy.
Is revision more risky than primary surgery?
Yes — leak risk is 2–4% vs <1%, operative time is longer, bleeding risk is slightly higher. Mortality stays low (<0.5%). The trade-off is worth it when the first surgery is no longer working.
Who will operate?
One of our three bariatric surgeons handles revisions. We assign based on case type, prior procedure, and surgeon availability. Dr. Felipe Bernal is the Da Vinci specialist; Dr. Rubén Luna is the senior most experienced; Dra. Carolina Rodríguez specializes in minimally invasive revisions.
Will insurance cover it?
For most US/UK patients, no. Revision bariatric tourism is typically out-of-pocket. GOG transparent USD pricing makes it predictable.
