Surgical technology in Colombia

Laparoscopic, minimally invasive & Da Vinci robotic

Your procedure is performed with minimally invasive technique — and, when your case calls for it, the Da Vinci robotic system with only three incisions. Less scarring, less pain and a faster recovery, so most international patients are cleared to fly home in as little as 8 days.

What it is

What is the gastric bypass?

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a two-part operation. First, the surgeon creates a small pouch from the upper stomach — roughly the size of an egg. Then a segment of the small intestine is rerouted and connected directly to that pouch, bypassing most of the original stomach and the first part of the small intestine.

That gives the bypass two mechanisms: restriction (you can only eat small amounts) and malabsorption (some calories pass through unabsorbed). It also rapidly changes the gut hormones that control hunger and insulin sensitivity, which is why most patients with type 2 diabetes see their blood sugar normalize within weeks — often before significant weight loss has occurred.

Candidacy

Am I a candidate?

BMI is the starting point, not the answer. Final candidacy is determined in your first consultation by a board-certified bariatric surgeon.

BMI 40+ — primary indication

Strong results across higher BMI ranges; superior to sleeve at BMI 45+.

Type 2 diabetes

Bypass produces remission in 80–85% of T2 diabetic patients. Strongest evidence base of any bariatric procedure.

Severe GERD / reflux

Bypass relieves reflux; sleeve can worsen it. Patients with GERD are often steered toward bypass.

Prior failed bariatric surgery

Bypass is the most common revision destination after a sleeve that did not deliver enough weight loss.

Benefits & Health Improvements

What you gain — the benefits of the gastric bypass

The bypass is the most powerful metabolic tool we offer. For the right patient, the benefits reach far beyond weight on the scale.

The strongest metabolic effectThe gastric bypass delivers the highest type 2 diabetes remission rates among the standard bariatric procedures, often improving blood sugar within days of surgery.
Greatest weight loss for higher BMITypically 65–80% of excess weight, which makes it the preferred option for higher-BMI and metabolic-syndrome patients.
Resolves severe acid reflux (GERD)Unlike the sleeve, the bypass usually eliminates chronic reflux — which is exactly why we steer severe-GERD patients toward it.
Improves hypertension, cholesterol and sleep apneaThe metabolic reset extends well beyond weight, improving several obesity-related conditions at once.
Decades of evidenceThe Roux-en-Y bypass is the most studied bariatric procedure in the world — the long-term reference standard.
Risks & Multidisciplinary Support

Yes, there are risks. No, you won't face them alone.

Gastric bypass is one of the most-studied surgeries in modern medicine — risks are real, well-characterized, and the data is solid. At GOG, what changes is what surrounds the procedure: a multidisciplinary team that follows you from pre-op through 12 months after surgery. You are not discharged into silence.

Anastomotic leak<1% rate in our program. Detected early through 1 night of in-hospital monitoring with bariatric-trained nursing.
Dumping syndromeAfter eating refined sugars, some patients experience nausea, sweating and rapid heart rate. Manageable with the dietary plan reviewed at every nutrition check-in.
Marginal ulcerSmokers and chronic NSAID users at higher risk. We screen pre-op and counsel directly — that conversation is not optional.
Vitamin and mineral deficienciesLifelong iron, B12, vitamin D and calcium supplementation required. The full schedule is built into the 12-month follow-up — labs reviewed remotely at every check-in.
Internal herniaRare late complication, surgically correctable. Direct WhatsApp access to your patient coordinator for any concerning symptom.
Behavioral & weight regainMost weight regain after bariatric surgery is behavioral, not surgical. Psychology evaluation pre-op and habit work through the year are part of the program — not optional add-ons.
Surgical mortality<0.3% at GOG. Globally reported at 0.3–0.5% for laparoscopic bypass.
The 12-month accompanimentScheduled virtual check-ins at months 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 with the surgeon, nutritionist and behavioral support. Labs reviewed remotely. Direct WhatsApp to your patient coordinator whenever a question comes up. International patients get the same program from anywhere in the world.

FAQ

Common questions

If yours is not here, a 45–50 minute virtual consultation is the fastest way to a personalized answer.

How much does the gastric bypass cost in Colombia?
At GOG, the all-inclusive surgical package ranges from USD $7,800 (laparoscopic) to $12,000 (Da Vinci robotic) (COP $30M–$47M at the current exchange rate). Same price as the sleeve. Includes surgery, surgeon fee, anesthesia, 1 night hospital, pre-op evaluation, and 12-month follow-up.
Sleeve or bypass — which one for me?
BMI under 40 with no severe GERD or diabetes: sleeve is usually the call. BMI 40+, type 2 diabetes, severe GERD, or prior sleeve that did not deliver: bypass is the call. Final decision is made together in your first consultation.
Will the bypass cure my diabetes?
About 80–85% of T2 diabetic patients see full remission (no medications needed). Another 10% see significant improvement. The mechanism is hormonal — your gut starts producing different hormones immediately after surgery, often before any weight loss.
Is bypass reversible?
Technically yes, but in practice it is rarely reversed. The anatomical changes are major and the reversal carries its own risks.
How long do I need to stay in Bogotá?
7–10 days. Two nights hospital + 5–7 days hotel recovery. We see you 24 hours before surgery and again before you fly.
Will insurance cover it?
For most US/UK self-pay patients, no. International bariatric tourism is typically out-of-pocket. GOG transparent USD pricing exists to make self-pay predictable.
Do you use the Da Vinci robotic system?
Yes — Da Vinci is available at GOG and is particularly useful in bypass revisions and high-BMI patients. Same price as conventional laparoscopy. We are 3-incision robotic pioneers in Colombia.
Who will be my surgeon?
One of our three bariatric surgeons — Dr. Rubén Luna, Dr. Felipe Bernal, or Dra. Carolina Rodríguez. All have 10+ years of experience and you choose based on availability and personal fit in the first consultation.
