What it is

What is a gastric balloon?

A gastric balloon is a soft silicone device that gets placed inside your stomach to take up space — so smaller meals make you feel full. It is the only bariatric tool that does not involve surgery, does not permanently change your anatomy, and gets removed (or self-deflates) after a defined period.

We offer two options at GOG, both at the same USD $5,000 price point: Allurion (a swallowed capsule balloon that inflates and self-deflates after 16 weeks — no anesthesia, no endoscopy) and Intragastric balloon (a traditional balloon placed endoscopically under light sedation, removed after 6 months).

Candidacy

Am I a candidate?

BMI is the starting point, not the answer. Final candidacy is determined in your first consultation by a board-certified bariatric surgeon.

BMI 27–35 — primary range

Patients with overweight or class I obesity who do not yet qualify for or do not want surgery.

Pre-surgical patients

Higher-BMI patients sometimes use a balloon first to reduce surgical risk before sleeve or bypass.

Quick win seekers

Patients who want a meaningful, defined-duration weight loss to break out of a plateau or prepare for an event.

Surgery hesitancy

Anyone who is not psychologically ready for permanent surgical change but wants a real medical tool.

Benefits & Health Improvements

What you gain — the benefits of the gastric balloon

The balloon is the least invasive option we offer: a non-surgical way to lose weight and rebuild eating habits.

Non-surgical, no incisionsThe Allurion balloon is swallowed in a capsule — no endoscopy and no general anesthesia. The intragastric balloon is placed endoscopically under light sedation.
Temporary and reversibleNothing about your anatomy is permanently changed; the balloon is removed or passes naturally at the end of its term.
A real kickstart10–15% of total body weight — ideal for lower-BMI patients or as a bridge before surgery.
Fast recoveryMost people are back to normal activity within a few days.
A habit reset, not just a devicePaired with our nutrition and behavioral program so the change outlasts the balloon itself.
Risks & Multidisciplinary Support

The balloon has risks too — and you won't manage them alone.

The balloon is the lowest-risk option in our catalogue, but it is not zero. What makes the difference is the program around the device: nutritionist, psychologist and physician support throughout your balloon period and beyond. You are not handed a balloon and sent home.

Nausea, vomiting and cramping (days 1–7)Common as the stomach adapts. Resolves in nearly all patients with the symptom-management plan and direct WhatsApp access to your coordinator during the first week.
Intolerance / early removal5–10% of patients ultimately need early balloon removal due to persistent symptoms. We screen pre-procedure and adjust the plan together with you.
Acid reflux / heartburnMay develop or worsen during the balloon period. Manageable with medication and an adjusted dietary plan — covered in every check-in.
Balloon deflation (rare)Intragastric: <1%. Allurion: includes built-in scheduled self-deflation by design.
Weight regain after removalWithout follow-up, weight commonly returns. That is exactly why GOG bundles the balloon with the Método 4 PRO program — nutrition and behavioral support continue after the device is out.
Procedure complicationsIntragastric endoscopy carries the standard small risks of any sedated endoscopy. Allurion is swallowed — no endoscopy required.
The accompaniment doesn't stop when the balloon comes outScheduled check-ins during the active balloon period plus continued nutrition and behavioral support afterward through the Método 4 PRO program. Labs and weight reviewed remotely. Direct WhatsApp to your patient coordinator throughout. International patients get the same program from anywhere.

FAQ

Common questions

If yours is not here, a 45–50 minute virtual consultation is the fastest way to a personalized answer.

How much does the gastric balloon cost in Colombia?
At GOG, both Allurion and intragastric balloons are priced at USD $5,000 (COP $19.5M). Includes the device, placement, all medical follow-up during the 16-week or 6-month period, and removal (intragastric) or post-deflation check (Allurion).
Allurion or intragastric — which one?
Allurion is the easier patient experience: swallow a capsule, no anesthesia, no endoscopy on placement, self-deflates after 16 weeks. Intragastric is the more established option with 30+ years of data, but requires endoscopy at placement and removal. We help you choose in the first consultation.
How much weight will I lose?
10–15% of your total body weight, on average. A 200-lb patient typically loses 20–30 lb during the balloon period. Less than surgery, more than dieting alone.
Will I regain the weight after?
You can — and that is why the balloon alone is rarely the full answer. We pair every balloon with our Método 4 PRO program (nutrition + psychology + physical activity) so the eating habits change while the balloon is in place. Patients who follow the program keep most of their loss.
Is it painful?
Not painful, but uncomfortable for the first 3–5 days as the stomach adapts. Nausea is the most common symptom. Manageable with medication and dietary care.
How long do I need to stay in Bogotá?
2–3 days for placement. After that, follow-up is remote through video visits.
Can I have a balloon if I had bariatric surgery before?
Generally no — the anatomy after surgery is not suitable for most balloon types. A revision surgery is the usual path.
Will insurance cover it?
For most US/UK patients, no. Gastric balloons are typically out-of-pocket even when surgery is covered.
