Laparoscopic, minimally invasive & Da Vinci robotic

Your procedure is performed with minimally invasive technique — and, when your case calls for it, the Da Vinci robotic system with only three incisions. Less scarring, less pain and a faster recovery, so most international patients are cleared to fly home in as little as 8 days.

What it is

What is the gastric sleeve?

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy — most people just say "the sleeve" — is a laparoscopic procedure that removes about 75–80% of your stomach. What is left behind is a narrow tube the size of a banana. You will still feel hungry, but you will fill up on a fraction of what you ate before.

The sleeve is restrictive: it limits how much you can eat in a sitting. It does not reroute your intestines (that is the bypass), and it does not block calorie absorption (your gut still works normally). The weight loss comes from a smaller stomach plus a measurable drop in the hunger hormone ghrelin, which is largely produced by the part of the stomach that gets removed.

Candidacy

Am I a candidate?

BMI is the starting point, not the answer. Final candidacy is determined in your first consultation by a board-certified bariatric surgeon.

BMI 30–35 with comorbidities

Class I obesity with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, or other metabolic conditions. Early surgical intervention is now standard for this group.

BMI 35 or higher

Standard surgical threshold. Comorbidities not required for candidacy in this range.

Age 16+, no rigid upper limit

From 16 with parental consent (adolescent bariatric programs are increasingly standard). Patients above 65 are routinely evaluated individually — fitness for surgery depends on overall health, not on the number itself.

Prior weight-loss attempts

Documented unsuccessful attempts with diet, exercise, or medications.

Benefits & Health Improvements

What you gain — the benefits of the gastric sleeve

Weight loss is the headline, but for most international patients the real goal is getting their health back. Here is what the gastric sleeve changes — beyond the number on the scale.

Significant, durable weight lossMost patients lose 60–70% of their excess weight in the first 12–18 months, with results that hold long-term when paired with our 12-month follow-up.
Type 2 diabetes improvement or remissionMany patients lower their blood-sugar medication after surgery, and a significant share see their type 2 diabetes go into remission.
Lower blood pressure and sleep apneaAs the weight comes down, patients frequently reduce or eliminate CPAP machines and antihypertensive medication.
Less joint pain, more mobilityLess load on knees, hips and lower back makes everyday movement and exercise far easier.
Simpler than a bypassNo intestinal rerouting means a shorter operation, faster recovery and a lower long-term risk of malabsorption.
Better energy, mood and fertilityImproved sleep, energy and fertility are commonly reported by patients within the first year.
Risks & Multidisciplinary Support

Yes, there are risks. No, you won't face them alone.

Every surgery carries risk — we don't hide that. The difference at GOG is what happens around the procedure: a multidisciplinary team that stays with you from pre-op through 12 months after surgery. You are not discharged into silence.

Surgical complications (leak, stricture, bleeding)<1% leak rate in our program; strictures rare and endoscopically managed. Detected early through close in-hospital monitoring (1 night with bariatric-trained nursing) and remote follow-up.
Acid reflux (GERD)May develop or worsen post-sleeve. We screen pre-op; patients with severe pre-existing GERD are steered toward bypass instead — that decision is made together with you.
Nutritional deficienciesLong-term iron, B12, and vitamin D supplementation required. The full schedule is set in your nutrition consult and revisited at every check-in for 12 months.
Behavioral & weight regainMost weight regain after bariatric surgery is behavioral, not surgical. Psychology evaluation pre-op and habit work through the year are part of the program — not optional add-ons.
Surgical mortality<0.1% at GOG. Globally reported at 0.1–0.3% for laparoscopic sleeve.
The 12-month accompanimentScheduled virtual check-ins at months 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 with the surgeon, nutritionist and behavioral support. Labs reviewed remotely. Direct WhatsApp line to your patient coordinator whenever a question comes up. International patients get the same program from anywhere in the world.

FAQ

Common questions

If yours is not here, a 45–50 minute virtual consultation is the fastest way to a personalized answer.

How much does the gastric sleeve cost in Colombia?
At GOG, the all-inclusive surgical package ranges from USD $7,800 (laparoscopic) to $10,300 (Da Vinci robotic) (COP $30M–$40M at the current exchange rate). Includes surgery, surgeon fee, anesthesia, 1 night hospital, pre-op evaluation, and follow-up. Excludes flights, accommodation outside our partner hotel, and the optional all-inclusive concierge package.
How much weight will I lose?
Most patients lose 60–70% of their excess body weight in the first 12–18 months. A patient who is 100 lb (45 kg) above their ideal weight typically loses 60–70 lb (27–32 kg) and stabilizes from there.
How long do I need to stay in Bogotá?
7–10 days minimum: 1 night in hospital, then 5–7 days hotel recovery before flying. We see every international patient 24 hours before surgery and again before they fly home.
Is the sleeve reversible?
No. Once removed, the stomach tissue does not come back. The bypass is also not reversible in practice. If the sleeve does not deliver enough weight loss, a bypass conversion is possible — that is what revision surgery is for.
Will my insurance cover it?
For most US and UK patients, no. International bariatric tourism is generally not covered by domestic insurance. That is the gap GOG fills — transparent self-pay pricing, all-inclusive packages, and predictable USD costs.
Do you use the Da Vinci robotic system?
Yes, when the case calls for it. Da Vinci robotic surgery is available at GOG (we are 3-incision pioneers in Colombia) and is most useful for revision cases, high-BMI patients, and anyone where minimizing visible scarring matters. Price is the same — available at higher tier for robotic vs conventional laparoscopy.
What is the recovery like?
Liquid diet for 2 weeks, soft foods for weeks 3–6, regular foods starting week 6. Back to desk work in 2 weeks, full physical activity at 4–6 weeks.
Who will be my surgeon?
One of our three bariatric surgeons: Dr. Rubén Luna, Dr. Felipe Bernal, or Dra. Carolina Rodríguez. Each has 10+ years of experience and you choose based on availability and personal fit during the first consultation.
